Ural Mts, Russia

  • The grand statue of Salavaat in Ufa, Russia. Salavaat is the hero of the Bashkirian people. A great horseman, he led the Bashkirian peasants in a revolt against the Russian leaders (they lost, and Salavaat was imprisoned, but no nevermind).
  • Our field party from the Geological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ufa. Back row (left to right): undergraduate Jules McWilliams, translator Larissa, colleague Julie Bartley, Peter "the great", Zuchra, Sergei, Vladimir, Alex, Igul. Front row (left to right): Rustin, director Viktor Pushkov, Edic, and Nina.
  • Several days of high rains brought the Inzer River and its tributaries to flood stage. The rains were a blessing for the local farmers, but brought some interesting traverses to our field party. Don't be fooled by the mere waist-high water - water velocities made this stream crossing quite a challenge!
  • Outskirts of the Village of Avzyan, in the central Urals, and views of Revet Formation, Mesoproterozoic Avzyan Group.
  • Type section of the Revet Formation, consisting predominantly of massive, deep-water stromatolitic carbonates that grade upward into peritidal carbonates containing abundant early diagenetic chert.
  • Nina, Larissa, and Peter cross their hammers in a sign of international solidarity among geologists.
