Inverted Fluvial Deposits

Evidence that Mars experienced a clement climate able to support flowing water is preserved in inverted fluvial deposits.  These sediments were laid down by rivers but because of erosion of the landscape in which they formed, are now higher than their surroundings.   Often these deposits are exhumed from beneath substantial overburden.  The large population of inverted fluvial features is the Aeolis Dorsa, in the western Medusae Fossae Formation.  This work investigating those features will contribute to understanding fluvial and sedimentological processes on Mars.
